Stencils aren’t just for craft projects! Stenciling your furniture is an easy way to completely transform its look and customize your décor to match your style. For this project, we took a basic office chair to a whole new level with this chic stencil pattern. Follow this tutorial to learn how to stencil your furniture with success.

  1. PREPARE: Setup your workspace in a well-ventilated area and cover your surroundings with a drop cloth to protect them from overspray. Cover all parts of the chair that you’re not painting with packing paper/foam and painter’s tape.
  2. STENCIL: To make sure you get a clean edge on the stencil, you’ll want to use a stencil adhesive spray to adhere it tightly to the chair. Spray the back of the stencil thoroughly with the adhesive spray, and stick the stencil onto the back of the chair, making sure to press firmly over the entire stencil to make sure it’s sealed. Then, tape the edges of the stencil with painter’s tape to secure it.
  3. PRIME: For ultimate coverage and adhesion, you have the option of applying a primer spray before painting. To apply primer, first shake your can of Stops Rust Universal Bonding Primer for one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Then, hold the can 10-16” away from the stencil, and spray the primer in a steady back-and-forth motion. Apply two or more light coats of the primer to the chair, allowing a few minutes in between each coat.
  4. PAINT: Shake your can of Ultra Cover 2x Satin spray paint in Satin Lemon Grass for one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Then, holding the can 10-16” from the stencil, spray the paint in a steady, back-and-forth motion. Apply 2-3 coats a few minutes apart.
  5. FINISH: After allowing the paint to dry for about an hour, remove the painter’s tape from around the stencil and carefully peel the stencil off the chair. Remove any remaining packing paper/foam and tape.

Display your newly stenciled chair and enjoy. Love the new look? Stenciling works great on all types of furniture: dressers, tables, cribs, headboards—you can even stencil your windows for special occasions!
