In only a few steps, you can give your worn out carpeting the shag and say hello to a brand new look with wood stain. Update your home from the '90s to today's farmhouse chic with Varathane. See how Erin from @Francois_et_moi did this project on her Instagram page.

  1. Remove all carpeting.
  2. Make sure all stair treads and risers are clean and free of dirt and debris.
  3. Lightly sand any areas of the stair treads and risers that aren't smooth and remove sanding dust with a tack cloth.
  4. Gently stir the Varathane Wood Stain with a stir stick and apply a generous amount of stain on each stair tread and riser. Work the stain with the wood grain using a lint-free cloth and wipe away the excess.
  5. Allow the wood stain to dry according to the instructions on the can.
  6. Once the wood stain is dry, apply the protective polyurethane with a foam brush and let it dry according to the instructions on the can.
  7. Wait 24 hours for light use and 3 days before full use of the staircase.
