Is outdated wallpaper cramping your style? Removing wallpaper can seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and product, you can get your fresh walls back once again. Here’s how to properly remove wallpaper in a few steps.
For even more information on removing wallpaper, check out our Wallpaper Removal Tips & Techniques Page.
- PREPARE: Wear a respirator mask while using DIF and open a window if possible. Lay down a drop cloth to protect your floors from drips.
- SCORE: If the top layer of your wallpaper does not peel off easily, use the PaperTiger Scoring Tool to score the paper. Score in a circular motion with minimal pressure. The score marks should be no less than one inch apart. The more you score, the easier it will be for the wallpaper stripper to penetrate.
- APPLY: To apply your DIF Liquid Concentrate Wallpaper Stripper, you can use the Zinsser Wall and Wallcovering Sponge, a roller, or a garden-type sprayer. Do not use a fine mist sprayer. Working in manageable sections from top to bottom, apply DIF to the wallpaper and wait 15 minutes. Then, reapply DIF to the same section and wait an additional 15 minutes.
- REMOVE: Use your Zinsser Paper Scraper to safely scrape the saturated wallpaper away from the wall. If there is any adhesive remaining, reapply DIF, wait 15 minutes, and scrape or sponge the adhesive off. Once the wall is free of paper and adhesive, rinse with water and a clean cloth or sponge.
- FINISH: Repeat steps 2-4 on the remaining sections of wallpaper until your wall is completely clear. Remember to continue working from top to bottom. Once your walls are clean, we recommend applying a Zinsser Primer to prepare for your next paint or wallpapering job.
