Create beautiful framed mirrors for your mantel using ordinary picture frames and Universal Metallic and Mirror Effect Spray Paints.
- Remove the back and the glass insert from your picture frame and use painter’s tape to cover any areas you do not wish to paint. Working in a well-ventilated area, shake your can of Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic Spray Paint (we used the colors Titanium Silver and Pure Gold) for 1 minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Hold the can 8-12” from the picture frame and spray in a steady, back-and forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Apply a few light coats of spray paint a few minutes apart. To give metal, glass, or wood candlesticks a coordinating metallic finish, repeat the same steps to achieve your desired look.
- To create a mirrorlike finish on the glass insert, first clean the glass with glass cleaner or soap and water and let fully dry. Shake your can of Rust-Oleum Mirror Effect Spray Paint vigorously for 1 minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Hold the can of Mirror Effect 10-12" from the glass surface and spray in a steady, back-and-forth motion on the opposite side of the glass that will be displayed. For best results, apply very thin coats and allow the paint to dry for 1 minute between coats. To achieve the desired mirror effect, apply up to five thin coats to the glass surface.
- Once the spray paint is dry, place the painted glass in the painted picture frame. Arrange framed mirrors and candlesticks to create an elegant mantel display.
TIP: See how Rust-Oleum Mirror Effect Spray Paint also can be used to create a unique mercury glass finish.
