A natural wood stain is all it takes to refresh and update these unfinished wall shelves. Create a simple and natural look in any room when you complete a DIY project like this one from Karen Marie Co.

  1. Lightly sand the pieces of wood to create smooth surface.
  2. Lightly stir the can of Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain.
  3. With a brush or clean, lint-free rag, apply the wood stain to the bare wood, following the directions on the can. Allow stain to penetrate the wood for 2-3 minutes and then remove excess with a lint-free cloth, wiping in the direction of the grain.
  4. Let the wood stain dry for approximately 1 hour.
  5. Apply Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane with a foam brush, following the directions on the label.
  6. For the smoothest finish, lightly sand the polyurethane finish between coats. A minimum of 3 coats are recommended.
  7. Let the polyurethane dry completely for 24 hours.
  8. Attach the brackets and hang your shelves on the wall.
