Don’t waste your money on expensive wall sconces! This DIY Mason jar vase will add the perfect touch of shabby chic to your home décor. Here’s how to make it in a few steps.

  1. PREPARE: Always work in a well-ventilated area and cover your surroundings with a drop cloth before spray painting or staining. Clean the inside and outside of the jar with glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Mask off the outside of the jar with painter’s tape and masking paper to protect it from overspray. Sand the wood to prepare the base, working your way up through each grit of sandpaper. Wipe away any sanding dust with a tack cloth after finishing with each grit.
  2. STAIN: To stain your piece of wood, first stir or shake your Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stain in Dark Walnut thoroughly. Then, use a rag or paint brush to apply a generous amount of stain onto the wood in the direction of the grain. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe away the excess stain in the same direction with a lint-free cloth. Let the wood dry for one hour.
  3. PAINT: To spray paint the mirrored glass finish onto the Mason jar, first shake your can of Mirror Effect spray paint for one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Then, hold your can 10-12” from the Mason jar and spray the inside glass in a sweeping motion. Apply three or more thin coats at a moderate speed, allowing a few minutes between coats. For best results, apply multiple light coats versus on heavy coat. Let the jar dry for one hour and remove the masking paper and tape. The mirrored glass finish will appear on the unpainted side of the glass and will intensify as the paint dries. TIP: Watch the video below for more tips on applying Mirror Effect.
  4. ATTACH: To attach the Mason jar to the wood base, size your metal hose clamp so that it’s just big enough to slip over the top of the jar. Find the back center of the hose clamp and drill a pilot hole through the metal. This is where the clamp will attach to the wood. Drill another pilot hole toward the top center of the wood where you will attach the clamp. Line up both pilot holes, and use your drill to screw the clamp into the wood.
  5. FINISH: Slide your Mason jar into the clamp and tighten. Add picture hanging hardware to the back of the wood, hang, and enjoy!
