1. SURFACES
Patios: RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer should only be applied on horizontal, structurally sound, broom swept concrete patios.
Decks: For wood decks and composite decking, please refer to Tips & Techniques for Wood.
not FOR USE ON: Vertical surfaces, smooth or floated concrete, fiberglass, tile, and metal surfaces. These surfaces will not allow for proper adhesion. Do not use on driveways, garages, or other areas with vehicular traffic.
USE OF THE 9” ROCKSOLID 20X DECK RESURFACER ROLLER COVER IS REQUIRED FOR PROPER APPLICATION (one roller for every 8 gallons)
2. NEW AND EXISTING CONCRETE
Allow newly poured concrete to cure for a minimum of 30 days before applying RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer.
The surface must also be properly cleaned and prepared using RockSolid Deck & Patio Cleaner to remove all foreign material prior to application. For best results, follow the PREPARATION instructions to be sure the RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer adheres properly to the concrete.
Concrete needs to be sound and porous to ensure RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer adheres properly. A visual assessment of the condition of the concrete, as well as checking for moisture and presence of a sealer are necessary tests to perform to determine if it is in good enough condition to coat. Presence of moisture and/or sealers will prevent the coating from adhering properly and may cause product failure. We do not recommend coating if there is moisture present. If the surface is sealed, RockSolid Deck Start Wood Primer will need to be applied before using RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer.
TESTING FOR MOISTURE
Apply a 2’ x 2’ sheet of plastic (such as a heavy-duty garbage bag or 1 gallon plastic storage bag) to an area of the concrete. Tape down the edges with duct tape and allow to set for 24 hours. If water droplets appear on the inside of the plastic or if concrete appears wet (darker in color); moisture is trapped in the concrete and it should not be coated.
3. TINTING
RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer must be tinted at the store of purchase. DO not APPLY IF PRODUCT HAS not BEEN TINTED.
4. COVERAGE
One 1-gallon can of RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer will cover approximately 40 square feet with one coat.
One 4-gallon bucket of RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer will cover approximately 160 square feet with one coat.
5. SURFACE PREPARATION FOR CONCRETE
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY PRIOR TO BEGINNING.
REGARDLESS OF AGE OR SURFACE CONDITION, FAILURE TO FOLLOW PREPARATION METHOD WILL RESULT IN POOR ADHESION AND POSSIBLE COATING FAILURE. NEW CONCRETE NEEDS TO WEATHER AT LEAST 30 DAYS AND SEALED CONCRETE PATIOS NEED TO WEATHER AT LEAST SIX MONTHS BEFORE APPLICATION.
DECK IN ONE DAY METHOD
Step 1 – Clean:
Clean the surface using a brush and RockSolid Deck & Patio Cleaner. The surface must be completely clean and free of dirt, grease, mildew and organic growth to ensure product bonding and adhesion. Loose paint needs to be scraped and removed from the surface.
Step 2 – Light Repairs:
Raised nail heads and/or screws should be secured before applying RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer. Remove and repair loose or chipped concrete.
Step 3 – Apply RockSolid Deck Start Wood Primer:
After cleaning, wait only 30 minutes and remove standing water before applying RockSolid Deck Start Wood Primer. Using a 3/8” nap roller or a synthetic bristle brush, saturate and apply generously in a consistent pattern. Work to a wet edge at all times. Apply thickly to the surface to ensure good penetration. RockSolid Deck Start Wood Primer appears milky during application but dries clear. Allow the primer to dry 2 hours before applying the solid topcoat over the primer. Do not apply the topcoat until the entire primed surface is clear and there are no white areas showing anywhere on the deck, including in cracks.
6. WEATHER
ONLY APPLY ROCKSOLID 20X DECK RESURFACER WHEN THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE WILL BE BETWEEN 50-90 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT FOR A FULL 24 HOURS (DAY AND NIGHT). Do not apply if the temperature will fall below 50 degrees for 24 hours after application.
DO not APPLY IF RAIN IS EXPECTED WITHIN 24 HOURS OF APPLICATION.
7. APPLICATION FOR CONCRETE
ONE THICK COAT OF ROCKSOLID 20X DECK RESURFACER IS REQUIRED
TRIM AND VERTICAL SURFACES
Before applying RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer to the horizontal deck, first coat vertical surfaces such as deck posts, railings, or balusters using RockSolid 2X Solid Stain or RockSolid 6X Deck Coat.
STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICATION
STEP 1:
Thoroughly stir material before and during application. When using more than one container, combine all containers to ensure color consistency.
STEP 2:
Using a 9” RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer Roller Cover, saturate the roller cover and apply generously back and forth in a consistent pattern. Work to a wet edge at all times. Avoid rolling back into coated areas when drying has begun.
STEP 3:
Allow 4-6 hours to dry to touch. Allow to dry 12 hours before light foot traffic and 24 hours before replacing furniture. If surface is tacky or soft, extend drying time before putting furniture or other heavy objects back in place. Full cure to a hard finish will take approximately 7 days. Drying times may vary depending on temperature and humidity.
8. DIFFICULT AREAS
Difficult areas will require rolling in more than one direction to ensure complete coverage. RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer will fill up to ¼” cracks. For difficult cracks use a heavily loaded brush to dab these areas until the gaps or cracks are filled.
9. DRYING TIMES
Dry times may vary due to weather conditions such as humidity, rain, high/low temperatures and seasonal changes. Apply RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer when no rain is expected for a minimum of 24 hours. Allow the area to dry for a minimum 24 hours before walking on the surface and before placing furniture on the area. Allow more time to dry at lower temperatures. RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer should not be applied if temperatures are below 50 degrees and above 90 degrees for 24 hours either day or night.
10. CLEAN UP
RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer is a water based product that will clean up with soap and water. For best results clean up should be done before the product dries. Cover the areas around spindles and walls to avoid splattering during the application process.
11. COATING MAINTENANCE
Basic maintenance consists of sweeping or blowing clean the surface from dirt, leaves, and other debris. Clean the surface seasonally and when necessary with RockSolid Deck & Patio Cleaner, a brush and a water hose.
For snow removal use a PLASTIC SHOVEL (DO not USE A METAL SHOVEL OR A SNOW BLOWER)
12. RECOATING ROCKSOLID
RockSolid products are made to last and adhere for long periods of time. RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer can be painted over using RockSolid 2X Solid Stain, RockSolid 6X Deck Coat, or another coat of RockSolid 20X Deck Resurfacer. Clean the existing surface thoroughly prior to priming with RockSolid Deck Start Wood Primer. After priming, follow application instructions to apply another topcoat.
